A total of 1, 400 projects embarked upon by the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, across the Niger Delta region have been completed and now ready for commissioning while others are at various stages of completion.
Acting Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Christy Atako who announced this, disclosed that she has so far commissioned 25 projects and inspected 37 others within one month of assumption of office.
A breakdown of the projects commissioned shows that, 8 were commissioned in Rivers state, 6 in Cross River State, 6 in Edo state, 3 in Abia, and another 3 in Ondo State.
“We are not done yet, we have over 1,400 projects to be commissioned, so the whole of next week has been marked out to commission quite a number of these projects”.
Dr. Atako who was speaking at the commissioning ceremony of Chief S.O. Walisi road Nkpolu, Rivers State however warned that while the Commission was desirous to commission and hand over projects to beneficiary communities, the NDDC insists that such projects must be executed according to specification.
According to her, this informed her regular and unscheduled visits to project sites to verify claims by contractors, with a view to delivering projects that will satisfy the needs of the people.
“ I have always believed that in NDDC, we have no business sitting down in the office, our business is outside, we are expected to provide development to people and that cannot be achieved sitting down in the office, so that is why, we are always in the field to see how our projects are fairing”.
According to the Acting Managing Director “I have on my table a list of projects, I am told that some of the projects are completed 100% and huge amount of money attached to them, it’s just proper to ensure that these projects exist, well executed and most importantly that the end users of the projects are comfortable with them, hence we are always on the move”.
While inspecting the Ihubogo-Odieke-Idiemerenji-Akoh 7.7kilometre road in Ahoada, the NDDC Boss directed the contractor to correct the failed areas and prepare the project for commissioning.
The Acting Managing Director also inspected the Rumuekpe-Ogbelle-Abua road where the contractor handling the project was invited for a meeting with a view to fast tracking the project for Commissioning.
