It was jubilation all the way at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt on Friday, when the NDDC MD/CEO team emerged champions of the 5-day football tournament organized by the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, for its staff. The golden trophy was lifted by Mr. Eddy Christopher, the captain of the MD team. They beat the Admin team through penalties after both sides drew level at full time. The goal keeper of the MD team saved a penalty and that gave his side the edge to carry the day.
The kick-off for the final match was taken by Engr. Tuoyo Omatsuli, the NDDC Executive Director Projects, who represented the Managing Director, Sir (Barr.) Bassey Dan-Abia. He was also on hand to present the trophies and medals to the outstanding teams at the end of the match.

Although some parts of the turf had puddles of water, the players were still able to show their dexterity and skill. The match had all the trappings of professional football with supporters’ club drumming continuously to cheer the teams.
In his remarks before the presentation of medals and trophies, Engr. Omatsuli advised the organizers to change the name of the MD/CEO team to something else since it clashed with the name of the competition. He noted that the football tournament was designed to help the staff to keep fit so as to stay alert at their jobs.
Also speaking on the competition, Barr. George Turnah, the Special Assistant to the NDDC Managing Director on Youth, Sports, Culture and Women Affairs, said that the football tournament would be sustained as a yearly event for the NDDC staff. He commended the Board and Management of the NDDC for using sports as a tool to enhance the physical wellbeing of the staff. He also commended the commission’s decision to continue with the competition.
Barr. Turner further said that the competition was an opportunity for the staff to engage in physical training which was necessary for a healthy lifestyle. He said that healthy contests between departments were bound to promote unity and peaceful co-existence among staff.
