The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Sir (Barr) Bassey Dan-Abia, has been presented with the golden trophy won by the MD/CEO Team at the final match of the 2014 NDDC football tournament. The winning team, led by its captain, Mr. Ebi Christopher, handed over the cup at the MD’s office in Port Harcourt.
Receiving the cup, Sir Dan-Abia, said that the benefits of the football tournament for the commission were immense and as such it would be sustained. He congratulated the winning team and urged them to see their victory as a motivation to continue to perform their duties efficiently.
The Managing Director promised that next year’s tournament would even be better planned. He also said that in subsequent football competitions, female staff of the commission would be given a platform to participate.
The Special Assistant to the NDDC Managing Director on Youth, Sports, Culture and Women Affairs, Barr.George Turnah, expressed joy that the 5-day tournament was concluded successfully without any untoward incident.
He gave kudos to the NDDC Board and Management for giving the staff of the commission the opportunity to participate in sporting activities, thus enhancing their physical wellbeing and mental alertness. He commended the 12 teams that participated in the competition, noting that the quality of play in the tournament was very high.
The champions were given prize money of N2million, while the second-placed team went home with N1.5 million. The third-placed team were rewarded with N1 million. Other prize winners were the best player of the tournament, the best goal keeper and the highest goal scorer who got N200,000 each.
The NDDC MD/CEO cup started last year with teams drawn from12 departments of the commission across the nine NDDC states.
